Zero opportunity, poverty, and crime. Common themes in the housing estates of Sunderland, North East England. A once proud region of industry. Now a wasteland scattered with the relics of the past, as generations of government continue to neglect it.
'Hope, ' a word rarely spoken, even more so in context with the region's youth. Steven France, community activist and mixed martial arts coach (MMA), haunted by the death of stepfather 'Mickey, ' found MMA as his savior from the trappings of these very estates. Determined to force change from within, his objective: to do the same with a group of youngsters, each facing their own unique challenges. Be it battles with drug use and dealing, unemployment and poverty, the weight of terminal illness, or the trials of immigration and having to abandon family, thousands of miles away.
Poised follows these youngsters and Steven over the course of a year as they build up to a potential, major public competition. Along with some guidance from stars of the UFC, the story is colored by family and friends, as we chart the successes, struggles, and differing human stories of life along the way. A universal underdog tale—there is a variation of Poised happening in every city, town, or village the world over, each with its own unique twist. This is one.
