When a traditional blue-collar guy, Bernie Evers, learns that his boy, Matty, has been dressing up in girls’ clothes, he acts out in anger and fear. Troubles deepen with news that Bernie’s whiskey-drinking mother, Carla, doesn’t have much time for…well, much of anything.
Matty struggles to become Maddie, and Bernie and Carla struggle to confront the differences between who they’ve been, who they are, and who they want to be. They lean on friends and neighbors for help. Some call them on their bullshit, some are full of bullshit themselves…they’re all imperfect people doing their imperfect best.
In the battle of being a parent, Carla explores her past, and Bernie is forced to question who it is that needs to change…his child or him.
“It’s not a movie about a child’s journey to understand their gender. It’s a movie about a parent’s journey to understand their child. And that is a journey that every parent travels.” - Director, Brian Silverman
Preceded by the short comedy “Hotter Up Close”.
